Amanda Palmer Raises $1M On Kickstarter

Wow was the first word that came to mind when I read this on Twitter earlier today. Wow. Nearly a month ago, the singer and artist extraordinaire launched a Kickstarter campaign to a) promote, mix, master, and distribute her newly recorded album and b) compile an art book and gallery tour for commissioned images inspired by songs from the album. To accomplish these goals, Palmer asked for $100,000 from supporters. After one frenzied month of fundraising, she will receive an astounding ten times that, and ultimately rank as the 7th best fundraiser all-time on Kickstarter (and most by a musician) at the time of writing.

Some interesting statistics from the campaign (as of 6/1/12)
Total raised: $1,192,793
Backers: 24,883
Avg. pledge: $48
# of pledges over $5,000: 34
2 pledges of $10,000 dollars

I think the combination of music album with visual art truly distinguishes Palmer’s project, because it affords her the ability to provide fans with unique, one-of-a-kind physical commodities in addition the actual record of her music. Take a look at some of the artwork she is offering, it looks pretty amazing:

We should keep in mind that Amanda has been a known performer for a decade, including several years on Roadrunner Records (WMG), and began this campaign already in possession of a large and passionate following (143K Facebook likes, 557K Twitter followers – both have grown in the last month but the point stands). Nevertheless, this is the biggest indication yet that direct-to-fan music commerce has a bright future.
